Everything about Incense
How Incense is MadeIn Focus9At the incense workshop of Shoyeido, a company that is over 300 years-old,master artisans use long established techniques to carefully make traditionalstick incense. Let’s see how it’s done.1Measuring,Compounding and MixingVarious scents are turned into powder and compoundeddepending on the type of traditional stick incensebeing made. Then, a binding agent is added, and it’sall carefully mixed together in a uniform fashion.2KneadingThe mixed ingredients are put in a kneadingmachine, and water and coloring are added asappropriate. It takes around 30 to 40 minutes forthe mixture to turn into a clay-like substance.3BundlingNext, the kneaded material is compressed in a mold toensure stable product quality. The process of casting itinto a cylinder is called“bundling.”4Pressing and CuttingThe cast material is pushed through the smallholes of a pressing machine to form thin and longstrands. Artisans catch these strands on a flat trayand cut them with a bamboo spatula.70
